Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

I am writing this letter to inform you that I would like to work part-time from next month because I will join the dental hygiene course. It is a part-time course at Durham college. In this course, I need to attend the college for 3 days a week. So, I am not able to work continue as a full-time dental assistant.

I would like to work on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturdays which are busy days of our clinic. Remaining days of the week, I want off from the work so I can manage my study with part-time work. I enrolled in this course because we have great opportunities for a dental hygienist position. Not only It will improve my knowledge regarding the oral health but also improving patient communication.

The remaining days of the clinic, my friend Sara who will help you to assist the dentist. And she has 12 years of experience in the assisting field. I would highly recommend you to hire her as a part-time dental assistant.

Hoping for a due consideration of my request.

Yours Sincerely,

Parth Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly explain the reason for the request (dental hygiene course), specify the desired working days, and describe the benefits to the employer. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter to a boss. However, the development of the third point regarding the benefits to the employer could be more explicit; while you mention improving knowledge and communication, linking these more directly to how they will improve your performance in the clinic would strengthen the response. Overall, the task is fully addressed.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use some cohesive devices such as 'So', 'Not only... but also', and 'The remaining days'. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or abrupt, such as the sudden introduction of your friend Sara in the final paragraph, which lacks a smooth connection to the previous discussion about your own schedule. Improving the use of linking phrases would help the flow of the letter feel more natural.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using topic-specific terms like 'dental hygiene', 'dental assistant', and 'oral health'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'work continue' instead of 'continue working' and 'assisting field' instead of 'dental assisting'. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the precision and variety required for a higher band score. Expanding your use of collocations and more sophisticated professional terminology would enhance your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors throughout the text, such as 'I will join the dental hygiene course' (should be 'I am enrolling in'), 'I want off from the work' (should be 'I would like time off'), and 'my friend Sara who will help you' (a fragment). Additionally, there are minor issues with article usage and verb tense consistency. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and sentence completeness will improve your accuracy.
