Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sunshine,

General Manager

I hope you are doing very well.

I am writing this letter to you regarding changes in my schedule. As of September I am going to take admission in Lauriar University in Business Management part time course. The length of this course would be around 8 months.

As of month September, I would like to continue working in afternoons on weekdays or full day on weekends. All my classes are in person, so I have to attend college on a regular basis. I would like to request you to be kind enough to cooperate with my availability.

Currently I am working as an assistant manager in your company, so my motive behind taking these studies is to get more theoretical knowledge about business concern and help to achieve organisational goals. I would really appreciate it if you will be accepting my updated availability. I hope to get a positive update from you.

Thank you

your faithfully

Nancy

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have addressed all three bullet points required by the prompt. You explained your reason for the request (studying Business Management), specified your preferred hours (afternoons on weekdays or full days on weekends), and described the benefits to your employer (gaining theoretical knowledge to help achieve organizational goals). The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. To reach a higher band, ensure that your explanation of the benefits is more detailed; for example, you could mention specific skills you will bring back to the team, such as improved project management or data analysis, which would make your argument more persuasive.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your request easily. You use basic cohesive devices like 'Currently' and 'As of', which function well. However, the transition between the introduction and the body could be smoother. To improve, try using a wider variety of linking words or phrases to connect your ideas more fluidly, such as 'Furthermore' or 'Consequently', rather than relying on simple sentence structures to move from one point to the next.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using terms like 'organizational goals', 'theoretical knowledge', and 'availability'. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'take admission in' (should be 'enroll in') and 'business concern' (which is slightly unnatural in this context). Additionally, 'your faithfully' is a minor error in the closing; for a formal letter where the recipient's name is known, 'Yours sincerely' is the correct convention. Expanding your vocabulary to include more precise business-related collocations would enhance your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'As of month September' (should be 'As of September' or 'In September') and 'if you will be accepting' (should be 'if you would accept'). There are also some punctuation and capitalization inconsistencies, such as the lack of a comma after 'Thank you'. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of future tenses in formal requests. Increasing the frequency of error-free complex sentences will help you move into the higher bands.
