Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I hope that you are well. I am writing to tell you that I want to work less hours because I choose to enroll in the part time education.

I want to enroll in the part time course to improve my computer languages, such as Java and HTML, and my classes are available on Monday and Tuesday so I am not available these days. Furthermore, after the classes, I have to keep practicing at home so that I can be prefer in using languages, therefore I want to work less than regular hours.

I choose to be working from Wednesday to Thursday 6AM to 1PM, and if it is available, I can come to work on weekends. But let know, before you call me to work on weekends.

Part time education will definitely help the origination. Firstly, computer languages improve the quality of work by making presentation on time and gathering all data correctly, which will not only save the time, but also reduce the workload.

I took forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards

Sandeep

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points required by the task. You explained your reason for wanting to reduce hours, specified your preferred schedule, and described the benefits to your employer. However, the development of these points is somewhat limited. For example, the explanation of how your studies benefit the employer is a bit vague, focusing on 'making presentation on time' rather than specific professional outcomes. To reach a higher band, ensure your ideas are more fully extended and clearly linked to the workplace context. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter, though some phrasing is slightly unnatural.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your request. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'Firstly', and 'therefore' to connect your ideas. However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly inaccurate, such as the transition 'But let know' which is grammatically awkward and disrupts the flow. Additionally, the referencing in the second paragraph ('these days') is clear, but the overall progression between sentences could be smoother. Improving the variety and naturalness of your linking words will help you achieve a higher score.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You have an adequate range of vocabulary to communicate your request, including terms like 'enroll', 'part-time education', and 'workload'. However, there are instances of word-choice errors and unnatural collocations, such as 'computer languages' (usually 'programming languages'), 'be prefer in using' (should be 'more proficient'), and 'the origination' (likely meant 'the organization'). These errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, but they indicate a need for more precise vocabulary usage and a better grasp of common professional collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you attempt complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'I want to work less hours' (should be 'fewer hours'), 'I choose to be working' (should be 'I would like to work'), and 'I took forward to hearing' (should be 'I look forward to hearing'). Punctuation is generally functional, but the sentence structure in the third paragraph is fragmented. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of modal verbs for requests, as well as ensuring your verb tenses are consistent throughout the letter.
