Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Mr. Pranto,
Good morning. I hope you are doing well.
As I mentioned earlier, I have to attend university four days a week. Therefore, I would like to request a reduction in my working hours so that I can attend my classes regularly while continuing my work responsibilities.
Reducing my working hours would allow me to give proper attention to my studies. It would also give me some additional time to develop my professional skills and learn new things that I could apply to my work. I believe that improving my skills in this way would not only benefit my personal development but also allow me to contribute more effectively to the organization.
With this in mind, I would like to request permission to work from **10:00 PM to 1:00 AM** on each working day. I believe this schedule would help me maintain a better balance between my university studies and work. It would also give me an opportunity to improve my English and develop other skills that could be useful in our professional environment.
I would sincerely appreciate it if you would consider my request and allow me to follow this schedule. Thank you very much for your time, understanding, and kindness.
Sincerely,
**Mehedi Hasan**

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the task. You clearly explain the need to attend university, propose a specific schedule, and articulate how your studies will benefit the employer. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a supervisor. The ideas are well-developed, particularly the section on how your professional development will contribute to the organization. To reach a higher band, ensure that the proposed schedule is realistic; requesting to work from 10:00 PM to 1:00 AM is quite unusual for a standard office environment, which might slightly affect the perceived logic of the request, though it does not detract from the task completion itself.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is well-organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a formal conclusion. Each paragraph has a central focus, and the progression of ideas is logical. You use cohesive devices such as 'Therefore,' 'With this in mind,' and 'It would also' to link your sentences effectively. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter. The flow is smooth, and the reader can easily follow your argument from the initial request to the final closing statement. No major issues with cohesion were noted.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary suitable for a professional context, such as 'professional responsibilities,' 'contribute more effectively,' and 'sincerely appreciate.' The language is natural and precise. While the vocabulary is sufficient and accurate, it is generally standard. To achieve a higher score, you could incorporate more sophisticated collocations or less common lexical items, such as 'mutually beneficial arrangement' or 'academic pursuits' instead of 'university studies.' However, the current range is more than adequate for the task.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
Your grammar is generally accurate, and you use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. For example, 'I believe that improving my skills in this way would not only benefit my personal development but also allow me to contribute more effectively' is a well-constructed complex sentence. There are very few errors, and those present do not impede communication. Punctuation is used correctly throughout the letter. The control over tense and modal verbs (e.g., 'would like to,' 'could apply') is consistent and appropriate for a formal request.
