Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I hope you are doing fine, and the reason for writing this letter to you is that I want to work less for a month starting from next week because I have to prepare for my exams that will be conducted in September.

In addition to the above, I would recommend to you that I can work in the evening from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday to Sunday, as I have my college on the remaining three days as well as have to attend my extra class that I just got enrolled in to do some practice with the instructor in the subjects in which I need to pay some more attention.

Moreover, this study will be beneficial fo this healthcare occupation as I am studying in the same field, and when I will get good score in the exams than I am able to work full time, also become able to apply for the higher level position. I hope you will understand my situation and agree with it.

I am looking forward to hear from you.

Warm regards,

Kuljeet Kaur.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points required by the task. You explained the reason for the request (exam preparation), specified the desired hours (Thursday to Sunday, 3 p.m. to 8 p.m.), and described the benefits to the employer (applying new knowledge to the healthcare role and potential for future full-time work). The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter to a boss, although it could be slightly more professional. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented, meeting the requirements for a Band 6.0. To reach a higher band, ensure your explanations are slightly more formal and fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'In addition to the above' and 'Moreover' to link your ideas. However, the flow is occasionally slightly mechanical. The referencing is generally clear, though some sentence structures are a bit repetitive. The overall progression of the letter is easy to follow, and the paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different points of the request. This demonstrates a coherent structure that meets the criteria for Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary to convey your message, such as 'healthcare occupation' and 'higher level position'. There are some minor errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'fo' instead of 'for' and 'than' instead of 'then'. While you successfully communicate your meaning, the vocabulary is somewhat limited and lacks the precision or variety required for higher bands. You rely on fairly common phrases. To improve, try to incorporate more specific professional terminology related to your field and avoid simple spelling slips.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you successfully communicate your intent, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'I am looking forward to hear from you' (should be 'to hearing'), 'as well as have to attend' (missing subject), and 'when I will get good score' (article missing). These errors do not impede communication, but they are noticeable. You demonstrate an attempt at complex sentences, but the control over these structures is inconsistent. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct verb forms after prepositions will help improve your accuracy.
