Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing this to request you about reducing my working hours. The key reason behind this request is to get some extra time for my part-time studies.

I got enrolled in one of the most famous universities for their Master's degree program which has online as well as offline classes on part-time bases. Due to this , I would not be able to work full-time.

I would really appreciate it if you could allow me to work during 9 AM to 2 PM instead of usual 9 AM to 5 PM . However , There will be no classes on Friday so I will be able to work regular hours .

As this degree is in Artificial intelligence , I will be able to learn advance use cases of AI . This will not only help me sharpen my skills but it will also benefit in company's upcoming projects.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,

Megha Panchal

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly explain the reason for the request (part-time studies), specify the desired working hours (9 AM to 2 PM), and articulate the benefit to the employer (AI skills application). The tone is appropriate for a formal request to a manager. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on the specific nature of the 'upcoming projects' to make the argument for your employer's benefit more persuasive and detailed, as the current explanation is somewhat brief.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a single aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use basic cohesive devices like 'However' and 'As this degree is...' to link ideas. To improve, try to vary your transition words and ensure that punctuation around these devices is accurate, as there are some minor spacing issues before commas that slightly disrupt the flow of the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'enrolled', 'Master's degree program', and 'advance use cases'. The language is generally natural and appropriate for a professional context. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'request you about' (should be 'request a reduction in') and 'on part-time bases' (should be 'on a part-time basis'). Expanding your vocabulary to include more precise professional collocations would help elevate your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is sufficient for this task. While most of your meaning is clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'I got enrolled' (passive voice 'I have enrolled' or 'I have been accepted' is more formal) and 'benefit in company's' (should be 'benefit the company's'). Punctuation is generally functional, though you should avoid placing spaces before commas, as seen in 'Due to this ,'. Focusing on these small errors will help you achieve a higher level of accuracy.
