Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Mr Sharma,
I am writing formally to reduce my current working hours in order to focus on my studies. I have opted for a new course of generative artificial intelligence and machine learning for all students studying computer science and engineering at University of Toronto.
For that particular course, it is required me to attend classes till noon. Because of that, I would not be available for morning shifts. Therefore, my updated availability would be 1:00 pm to 11p:00 pm on week days. However, on weekends, I will be available for whole day.
Studying about Generative Artificial intelligence and tools integrated with large language models is beneficial for not only myself but also our organization. As the software utilized in our company is also integrated with those technologies, I can excel my performance by completing the course. I hope you understand that.
Looking forward for your response.
Yours Sincerly,
Nilay M Borsadiya

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have addressed all three bullet points of the task effectively. You clearly explain the reason for the request (AI studies), specify the desired working hours (1:00 pm to 11:00 pm), and articulate how the company will benefit from your new skills. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on the specific benefits to the employer, perhaps by mentioning a particular project or workflow that your new knowledge could improve, which would add more depth to your argument.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the purpose of the letter to the specific request and finally the benefits. Paragraphing is used correctly to separate these distinct ideas. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Therefore', 'However', and 'Because of that' to link your sentences. While the flow is generally clear, the transition between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother. The overall structure is sound and serves the purpose of the letter well.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary relevant to the topic, such as 'generative artificial intelligence', 'integrated', and 'utilized'. There are a few minor issues, such as 'excel my performance' (which is slightly unnatural; 'enhance' or 'improve' would be better) and 'Yours Sincerly' (a spelling error). Despite these small slips, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly and appropriately for a professional context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'it is required me to attend' (should be 'it requires me to attend' or 'I am required to attend') and 'available for whole day' (missing an article: 'the whole day'). Additionally, there is a typo in '11p:00 pm'. While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles.
