Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt: explaining the reason for the reduction in hours, specifying the desired schedule, and describing the benefits to the employer. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter to a manager, although it occasionally slips into a slightly informal register. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented, providing enough detail to satisfy the requirements of the task. The purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning, and the student maintains a consistent position throughout the response.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized into paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the request. The use of cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'Moreover', and 'Apart from this' helps to guide the reader through the text. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the paragraphing could be more refined to improve the flow. There are minor issues with punctuation and sentence structure that occasionally disrupt the progression of ideas, but the overall structure remains clear and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully conveying the intended meaning. There are some attempts to use more specific terminology, such as 'rejuvenate' and 'fruitful', which is positive. However, there are several spelling errors (e.g., 'tronoto', 'sechdule', 'lesiure') and some awkward phrasing (e.g., 'give me hours according to it and need'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more careful proofreading and a wider command of collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the student attempts complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly regarding articles (e.g., 'in master of business management'), subject-verb agreement, and sentence fragments (e.g., 'Since, i am an international student ,so i can just do 24 hours of a week'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with frequent misuse of commas and capitalization errors. These errors are noticeable and occur throughout the text, though they rarely prevent the reader from understanding the core message.
