Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Logan,

Hope this email finds you well. I am writing you in regards to my full time working hours to be reduced to part-time.

I received a letter from Seneca college about acceptance in full time program for International business, this semester. My course duration is for 12 months with 3 days on campus and 2 days online classes. There will be 3 month of summer break, where I will be allowed to work full-time. I would really appreciate if you can change my full-time status to part-time as of now.

Additionally, this course will help me to prepare for an internship for financial analyst role in our company. Not only I will excel to secure better grades but will make sure it does not affect my overall performance in organization.

Kindly let me know your intake on this no later than end of this month. This will help me to follow back with college within time.

Your sincerely ,

Neha

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly state the reason for the request (study), specify the schedule, and explain the benefit to the employer (internship preparation). However, the second bullet point is only partially addressed; while you mention the course duration and days on campus, you do not explicitly state the specific working hours you are requesting to work (e.g., 'I would like to work from 9 am to 1 pm'). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager, and the purpose is clear throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Additionally' and 'Not only... but', which help the flow of ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing in the final paragraph ('follow back with college') is a bit awkward. The overall progression of the letter is easy to follow, and the paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different requirements of the task.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'full-time status', 'international business', and 'performance'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'intake on this' (should be 'input' or 'thoughts') and 'follow back with' (should be 'follow up with'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band score. The use of 'organization' without an article is also a minor slip.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I am writing you in regards to' (should be 'regarding'), 'acceptance in full time program' (missing articles), and '3 month of summer break' (should be 'months'). The sentence 'Not only I will excel to secure better grades but will make sure...' has an awkward structure; it should be 'Not only will I excel... but I will also make sure...'. These errors are noticeable but do not impede communication.
