Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Mr.Boucher,
I wish this letter finds you well. I am writing this letter to request you about my working hours. In this september, I applied for the early childhood educator lavel-2 programme. I am doing this study with my job so, I enroll as a part time student.
Currentlly, I am doing 9AM to 5PM 8 hours shift but If possible then I want to change and reduce my shift timing because of study. Additionally, I am getting my classes in the morning so, I would prefer afternoon shift 12 PM to 5PM and 5 hours shift.
Moreover, I am working as an early childhood educator but I have just level 1. So, I want to enhance my knowledge with kids and for the kids. Furthermore, it is beneficial for you too because you will get one more employee with level 2.
If you can do this then that would be great for me.
Yours faithfilly,
Raj

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have addressed all three bullet points required by the task: explaining the reason for the request, specifying the desired hours, and describing the benefits to the employer. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, while you mention that your studies will benefit the employer by providing a level-2 educator, this could be expanded by explaining how the specific skills learned in the early childhood educator programme will improve your daily performance or contribute to the centre's quality. The letter is functional and covers the requirements, but more detail would lead to a higher score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the purpose of the letter to the specific request and finally the benefits. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Additionally', 'Moreover', and 'Furthermore' to link your ideas. However, the paragraphing is a bit disjointed, and some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The opening sentence 'I wish this letter finds you well' is a common error; it should be 'I hope this letter finds you well'. Improving the flow between sentences and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear, singular focus would enhance the overall coherence of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'early childhood educator' and 'programme'. However, there are several instances of awkward phrasing and word choice errors, such as 'request you about' (should be 'request a change to') and 'getting my classes' (should be 'attending classes'). There are also minor spelling errors like 'lavel-2' (level-2) and 'Currentlly' (Currently). To reach a higher band, you should focus on using more precise collocations and ensuring accurate spelling of professional terminology.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. Examples include 'I enroll as a part time student' (should be 'I have enrolled'), 'I am doing 9AM to 5PM 8 hours shift' (should be 'I currently work an 8-hour shift from 9 AM to 5 PM'), and 'If you can do this then that would be great' (which is slightly informal). While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they are frequent enough to impact the overall accuracy of your writing. Focusing on verb tenses and article usage will help improve your score.
