Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Brian,
I hope this letter finds you in good spirits. I am writing to formally request an amendment in my now working hours. I saw an advertisement a few days ago about a course related to reducing denials in medical billing, and I immediately thought of enrolling in it.
It is a 10 weeks course, with classes scheduled on 1pm till 4pm from Monday to Friday. The classes are starting from the 1st of next month. As I would be taking the classes regularly, I won't be able to work full-time. I would be available from 5pm till 9 pm for next 2 months.
I believe that the knowledge I will acquire from this course would be really beneficial for the company. As it will help me learn about various denial reasons, and how we can reduce denials. It will eventually help us increase revenue and client volume. Once I am done with the course, I will be available to work full-time again.
I will be waiting for your approval.
Yours sincerely,
Kenny Edwards

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have addressed all three bullet points of the prompt effectively. You clearly explained the reason for the request (enrolling in a medical billing course), specified the desired working hours (5pm to 9pm), and articulated the benefits to your employer (reducing denials and increasing revenue). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a supervisor. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands both your personal goals and the professional value you bring to the company. The letter is well-structured and fulfills the requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the request, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'As', 'Once', and 'I believe that' to link your ideas. While the flow is clear, the transition between the second and third paragraphs could be slightly more sophisticated to improve the overall cohesion. However, the paragraphing is appropriate, and the progression of ideas is logical throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary suitable for a professional context, such as 'formally request', 'amendment', 'enrolling', and 'acquire'. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'amendment in my now working hours' (which should be 'current working hours') and '10 weeks course' (which should be '10-week course'). Despite these minor inaccuracies, your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning precisely and professionally. You successfully use industry-specific terms like 'medical billing' and 'denial reasons' to support your argument.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. There are some grammatical slips, such as '1pm till 4pm' (which should be 'from 1 pm to 4 pm') and 'for next 2 months' (which requires an article: 'for the next two months'). Additionally, the sentence 'As it will help me learn about various denial reasons, and how we can reduce denials' is a sentence fragment that should be joined to the previous clause. However, these errors are non-systematic and do not impede communication. The majority of your sentences are clear and grammatically sound.
