Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Mr. Clarke,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing to request you that I want to work few hours from next month because I am planning to study a Vestibular Rehabilitation course.
Recently, I have decided that to enroll this course, which is started from first week of next month. I believe it is an excellent opportunity to improve my professional knowledge and skill. Therefore, I decided that I will do less work hours, in order to full concentrate on my studies.
The course usually takes place in the evening. So, I would not able to do work in evening hours. I can work in morning hours anytime between 9 am to 3 pm. I would greatly appreciated if you could adjust my working schedule. If I learned this course then it will help our organization in various ways. I can treat many patients with better treatment related to vertigo, headache and balance problems. Moreover, It will directly attracts more clients to our clinic.
I look forward to hearing from you and hope you will consider my request.
Yours faithfully,
Darshit

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have addressed all three bullet points required by the task: explaining the reason for the request, specifying the desired hours, and describing the benefits to the employer. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a boss. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, while you mention the course will help the organization, providing a more concrete example of how your new skills would be applied in the clinic would have strengthened the response. Overall, the purpose of the letter is clear and the requirements are fully met.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, with each paragraph focusing on a specific aspect of the prompt. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Therefore', 'Moreover', and 'So' to link your ideas. However, the flow is occasionally interrupted by minor errors in sentence structure, such as 'I am writing to request you that I want to work'. The transition between the request and the benefits could be smoother. Overall, the progression of ideas is easy to follow, and the paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'professional knowledge', 'organization', and 'opportunity'. There are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'full concentrate' (should be 'fully concentrate'), 'do not able to do work' (should be 'would not be able to work'), and 'It will directly attracts' (should be 'It will directly attract'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise collocations and ensuring correct verb forms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including issues with verb tenses ('which is started' instead of 'which starts') and modal verbs ('would not able to'). Some sentences are slightly awkward, such as 'I am writing to request you that I want to work'. While the meaning remains clear, the frequency of these errors prevents a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of auxiliary verbs will significantly improve your accuracy.
