Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear HR Manager,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this email to inform you about upcoming changes in my schedule and working hours starting from the second week of January 2027.

I have got admission in the tourism and hospitality diploma that requires me to attend in-person classes 3 days a week. I will also have some projects and assignment that requires my attention every week. For that reason, I would like to change my work availability to part-time for the upcoming 8 months.

As far as my working hours are concerned, I would like to work only during the weekends from 10AM until 7PM, as well as I can work on Wednesday's evening shifts starting from 4:30 PM until midnight.

I have enrolled in the hospitality diploma to gain in-depth knowledge about the hotel operations. This will not only help me to understand how things looks like from management perspective, but also I will contribute my best knowledge that I am expecting to learn with the team.

I hope you to hearing back from you.

Thankyou

Kind regards,

Jagmeet

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained the reason for your request (enrolling in a diploma), specified your desired working hours (weekends and Wednesday evenings), and articulated how your studies would benefit the employer (gaining management-level knowledge). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset. To reach a higher band, ensure that the connection between your studies and the employer's benefit is even more explicit, perhaps by mentioning specific skills you could apply to your current role.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use some cohesive devices such as 'For that reason' and 'As far as my working hours are concerned' to link ideas. However, the transition between the final body paragraph and the conclusion is slightly abrupt. Using more varied linking words or phrases would improve the flow and help you achieve a higher score in this criterion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, such as 'upcoming changes', 'in-person classes', and 'in-depth knowledge'. There are some minor errors in word choice, such as 'I have got admission' (should be 'I have been admitted to') and 'how things looks like' (should be 'how things look'). While these errors do not impede communication, they show a need for more precise control over collocations and verb forms. To improve, focus on using more sophisticated professional terminology related to workplace scheduling and professional development.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. However, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'I hope you to hearing back from you' (should be 'I look forward to hearing from you') and 'Wednesday's evening shifts' (the apostrophe is unnecessary here). Additionally, there are minor subject-verb agreement issues, such as 'assignment that requires' (should be 'assignments that require'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. Increasing your focus on proofreading for small grammatical inaccuracies would help elevate your score.
