Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Mr. Sharma,
I am writing to inform you about that I have enrolled myself in a part time course. Therefore, I would like to reduce my working hours from 40 hours per week to 28 hours per week.
Recently, I have been looking to grow in my career, and nowadays many of the companies are looking to hire bilingual employees to communicate with foreign clients. So, I have decided to enroll in a 3-month French speaking course in a nearby university. My classes timings are from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM in a weekdays. Hence, I am unable to provide you my full-time availability.
I have learnt from this job and would love to continue to provide my services . I can work early morning shift from 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM or later in the evening and could help the store during closing. My classes takes place in the weekdays only. I can work 8 hours shifts in the weekend.
As we all are aware, we live in the heart of the city where many tourist comes into our shop for shopping. Many times we struggled to understand their language, especially french speaking customers. This course would not only help me to suggest them better clothing while speaking the same language but also, I can also navigate in the corporate world within the same brand.
I am looking forward to your response.
Yours faithfully,
Gaurav

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain the reason for the request (enrolling in a French course), specify your desired working hours, and articulate the benefits to your employer, such as better customer service for international clients. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. The ideas are well-developed and relevant, providing a clear justification for your request. You have maintained a consistent focus throughout the letter, and the purpose of the communication is immediately clear to the reader.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, moving from the request to the justification, the proposed schedule, and finally the benefits. You use cohesive devices such as 'Therefore', 'Hence', and 'As we all are aware' to link your ideas effectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different sections of the letter. The flow is smooth, and the reader can easily follow your argument from start to finish without any confusion regarding the structure or the intent of the message.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary suitable for a professional context, such as 'enrolled', 'availability', 'navigate', and 'corporate world'. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'classes timings' (should be 'class times') and 'many tourist comes' (should be 'many tourists come'). However, these errors do not impede communication. You successfully use topic-specific vocabulary related to employment and language learning. To reach a higher band, focus on refining collocations and ensuring subject-verb agreement with plural nouns, as these small slips currently prevent a higher score in this criterion.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'inform you about that I have' (remove 'about'), 'in a weekdays' (should be 'on weekdays'), and 'my classes takes place' (should be 'my classes take place'). While these errors are noticeable, the majority of your sentences are clear and error-free. The punctuation is generally accurate, and the letter is easy to read. To improve, pay closer attention to preposition usage and subject-verb agreement, as these are the most frequent sources of error in your writing.
