IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You would like to reduce your working hours in order to study part time.

Write a letter to your boss. In your letter

  • say which hours you would like to work
  • describe how your part-time studies would benefit your employer

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear sir/madam,

I hope you’re doing great. I work as an employee in your company as a junior administration associate. I am writing this letter to inform you about my switch from full-time to part-time working hours as I enrolled myself for a higher level administrative course with an institute and I have received a joining admission letter too from them.

This, being the main reason behind my reduction of working hours, I want to concentrate completely as my classes would take place online during weekdays leaving the weekends to myself to prepare for the assignments assigned by my professors.

I would also like to request my availability of working 22 hours during weekends or on weekdays where my classes would be short and I would be able to manage both together. This would help me to earn and study equally keeping the time-frames in mind.

I assure you that my studies would be beneficial for our company as it would not only help me substantiate my efforts towards our company but also take our company to the crest of the business world. Thus, I would request you to take my plea into consideration and act accordingly.

Hope to get a prompt and positive response from your side.

Yours faithfully,

Iqra !

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain the reason for the request (enrolling in an administrative course), specify the desired working hours (22 hours), and describe the benefits to the employer. The tone is appropriate for a formal request to a supervisor. The ideas are well-developed, and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset. To reach a higher band, ensure that the proposed schedule is slightly more concrete, as 'weekends or weekdays' is a bit vague for a formal request, but overall, the task requirements are fully met.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use some cohesive devices such as 'This, being the main reason' and 'Thus', which help connect your ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive. To improve, try to vary the way you link sentences and ensure that the flow between the introduction and the body paragraphs is smoother. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'substantiate my efforts' and 'crest of the business world' show an attempt to use more sophisticated language. However, some word choices are slightly unnatural or imprecise, such as 'switch from full-time to part-time working hours' (a 'request to transition' would be more formal) and 'joining admission letter' (simply 'acceptance letter'). The vocabulary is adequate for the task, but more precise collocations would elevate the professional tone of the letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are clear, and the meaning is never in doubt. There are some minor grammatical slips, such as 'I work as an employee in your company' (which is redundant; 'I am a junior administration associate at your company' is more concise) and 'manage both together' (which is slightly informal). Punctuation is generally accurate, though the use of '!' in the sign-off is inappropriate for a formal business letter. Focus on refining sentence structure to avoid redundancy.
