Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Mr Joseph,
I am writing to request for a reduction in my current working hours because I will be going for a part time study in few weeks.
I would like to reduce my working hours so that I can have some hours dedicated to concentrate on the part time study. Therefore, I will need to read course materials and prepare for upcoming assessments after work hours.
Furthermore, early hours within 8am to 3pm would be preferrable. This will give me the work flexibility needed for my part time study because I will be closing early. This will make it easier for me to head out for the evening class scheduled for 4pm.
Additionally, I believe my part time studies will contribute positively to the growth and development of the organization due to the new technical skills I will be applying in our future projects. However, it will also foster client satisfaction and good experience when they do business with us. Thank you for your consideration and I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours faithfully,
Abeeb Abdul-raheem

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully addressed all parts of the task. You clearly explained the reason for the request, specified the desired working hours (8am to 3pm), and articulated how the employer would benefit from your studies. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands your position and the value you bring to the company. To reach a higher band, ensure that your explanation of the benefits to the employer is slightly more specific to your role, rather than using general phrases like 'growth and development'.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific requirement of the prompt. You used cohesive devices such as 'Therefore', 'Furthermore', and 'Additionally' to link your sentences effectively. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions could be more varied to avoid a slightly mechanical feel. Overall, the information is easy to follow, and the structure supports the purpose of your communication effectively.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You have used an adequate range of vocabulary for this task. Phrases like 'contribute positively', 'foster client satisfaction', and 'technical skills' are well-chosen and appropriate for a professional context. However, there are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'going for a part time study' (should be 'undertaking part-time studies') and 'preferrable' (spelling error). To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations and ensure spelling is accurate. The current range is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly without any impediment to the reader.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most of your sentences are clear and grammatically sound. There are a few minor errors, such as 'a part time study' (should be 'part-time studies') and 'However, it will also foster...' (the use of 'however' is slightly illogical here as the previous sentence was already positive). Punctuation is generally accurate. To achieve a higher band, focus on increasing the variety of complex structures and ensuring that linking words are used with precise logical intent.
