Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing this letter to inform you that I would like to continue as a part-time employee.

I have taken a Part-time course in the field of Data Analysis and it would be difficult for me to continue working full-time because I would have classes three days a week.

I will only be able to work Monday, Wednesday and Friday because on the rest of the days, my classes will be scheduled as yesterday I received my timetable from my College.

This course will open new paths for me to contribute into your company because the future is about Artificial Intelligence and this course will teach me the tools how to analyze the data using Artificial Intelligence that would make the work more efficient.

I hope you understand and you let me work Part-time because I want to be more efficient at my work and taking these type courses will help me be more productive.

Your Faithfully,

Harshit

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: explaining the reason for the request, specifying the desired hours, and describing the benefits to the employer. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, while you mention the benefits of Artificial Intelligence, the explanation is a bit repetitive and could be more specific regarding how these skills will be applied to your current role. To reach a higher band, ensure that each point is fully extended with clear, logical reasoning that directly links your studies to the employer's needs.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the request to the schedule and finally the benefits. However, the paragraphing is weak; the entire body of the letter is presented as a single block of text. Using clear paragraph breaks for each bullet point would significantly improve the readability and structure of your response. Additionally, while you use some cohesive devices like 'because' and 'therefore' (implied), the flow between sentences is sometimes a bit mechanical. Using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring each paragraph has a clear topic sentence would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'Data Analysis', 'Artificial Intelligence', and 'efficient'. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'contribute into your company' (should be 'contribute to') and 'taking these type courses' (should be 'these types of courses'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the sophistication and precision required for higher bands. Try to incorporate more varied professional collocations to sound more natural and precise in a business context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as the incorrect sign-off 'Your Faithfully' (should be 'Yours faithfully') and issues with article usage and prepositional phrases. For example, 'my classes will be scheduled as yesterday I received my timetable' is a bit clunky and could be restructured for better flow. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and refining your use of complex sentence structures will help improve your accuracy.
