Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Boss,
I hope you are doing absolutely fine. I'm also enjoying being a part of this reputed organization.
However, I wanted to do a heads up prior to informing you that I wanted to reduce my working hours effectively from August 15th. As my final exams are around the corner therefore, I must consume some time in my studies as well.
My new availability would be Monday to Friday 9:00 am to 5:30 pm. Nevertheless, on some week days I might be available until 11 pm as well that I'll inform prior one day to the HR. I would not be able to show up on weekends due to my tuition classes.
Once I complete my Accounting certification this would help me work more effeciently in the stream. I am articulating my best self so that I can grasp all the important terms and tasks to polish my skills.
Yours sincerely,
Jasdeep Kaur
Sr. Accountant

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly state the reason for the request (exams), specify the desired working hours, and explain the benefit to the employer (Accounting certification). The tone is generally appropriate for a formal request, although the opening 'Dear Boss' is slightly informal; 'Dear [Name]' or 'Dear Manager' would be more professional. The ideas are relevant and sufficiently developed to meet the requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized into distinct paragraphs, each serving a clear purpose. You use some cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Nevertheless', and 'Once I complete', which help the flow of ideas. However, the transition between the opening and the main body is slightly abrupt. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow throughout the letter.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'reputed organization', 'availability', and 'articulating'. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'consume some time' (better: 'dedicate time') and 'show up' (better: 'attend' or 'be present'). The phrase 'do a heads up' is also slightly informal and non-standard in this context. Despite these minor inaccuracies, the meaning is always clear.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as the redundant use of 'therefore' in 'As my final exams are around the corner therefore, I must...', and the phrasing 'that I'll inform prior one day to the HR', which is awkward. Additionally, 'effeciently' is misspelled. While these errors are present, they do not impede communication, and the overall structure of the letter remains clear.
