Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear sir,

Iam writing this letter to discuss about my change in availability from full time to part time for the coming 6 month starting from September 2026.

As i already mentioned in the previous one to one review meeting,I'm planning to update my skills and knowledge by taking a new course in customer service .This will help me to find more carrier oppoprtunities in the nearby future and also helps my position in the company to deliver best guest experience.

The course will be starting at the September and ends in March.During that time i neeed to shift my focus more to the course which help me to gain new pratical knowledge in customer service.

Eventhough iam moving to part time, My classes are online and most of them starts at 8:00am .so I would really appreciate the midshift from 2:00pm to 8:00pm and my availability is fully open on weekend.

I will be available on call at anytime when my team need me.Hope you will consider my request and do the needful.Wishing you a wonderful week ahead.

with respect

Gokul

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain the reason for the request (professional development), specify the desired hours (2:00 pm to 8:00 pm), and describe the benefits to the employer (improved customer service skills). The tone is generally appropriate for a formal request. However, the development of the benefits could be more explicit; while you mention delivering a 'best guest experience,' elaborating on how your specific course content would directly translate to workplace efficiency would have strengthened the response. Overall, the task requirements are fully met.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter follows a logical structure with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. Paragraphing is used to separate the purpose of the letter from the specific request details. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat basic and occasionally repetitive. For instance, the transition between sentences could be smoother; phrases like 'Eventhough iam moving to part time' are functional but could be improved with more sophisticated linking words. Referencing is generally clear, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'availability,' 'professional development,' and 'practical knowledge.' There are some spelling errors, such as 'carrier' instead of 'career,' 'oppoprtunities' instead of 'opportunities,' and 'pratical' instead of 'practical.' Additionally, 'do the needful' is an idiom that is not standard in international business English. While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the response from reaching a higher band. Focusing on accurate spelling and more formal business collocations would improve your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several recurring grammatical errors, particularly with capitalization ('Iam', 'i', 'My') and punctuation (missing spaces after commas and periods). Subject-verb agreement is occasionally inconsistent, such as 'most of them starts' instead of 'start.' While you successfully use complex sentences, the frequency of these minor errors is noticeable. To improve, ensure you proofread for basic mechanical errors and ensure consistent capitalization, which is essential for formal correspondence.
