Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Sir,
I am writing this letter to inform you about my decision to reduce working hours for studying an MBA course part-time.
I appeared for the entrance test for the Master of Business Administration course at Dalhousie University last month that I have successfully cleared yesterday and my classes will be starting in September 2026. In order to manage my coursework along with job and concentrate on my studies, I need to reduce my working hours. Therefore, from September 7, 2026, I will only be available to work for the opening shifts from 4.30am to 11am during weekdays. For the weekends, you can schedule me on Saturday for any daytime shift and I am looking to get Sunday off for my assignments and case studies,
I assure you that my skills from this degree will definitely enable me to encourage team members for good customer service, reduce customer complaints through better communication, and earn good revenue in the business.
Kindly consider my request to schedule me according to the given availability. Thanks in advance.
Yours sincerely.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly explain the reason for the request (MBA studies), specify the desired working hours (4:30 am to 11 am weekdays), and articulate how the employer will benefit from your new skills. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a boss. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning. You have maintained a consistent professional tone throughout, which is essential for this task type.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use cohesive devices such as 'Therefore', 'In order to', and 'I assure you that' to link your ideas effectively. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter. The progression of ideas is smooth, moving from the reason for the request to the specific details and finally the benefits to the company.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary suitable for a professional context, such as 'inform', 'successfully cleared', 'manage my coursework', and 'customer service'. There are no significant errors in word choice that impede communication. While the vocabulary is functional and accurate, it could be slightly more sophisticated to reach the highest bands. For instance, instead of 'good revenue', using 'profitability' or 'financial performance' would show a more advanced command of business-related terminology. Overall, the lexical range is sufficient and precise enough for the task.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most sentences are error-free, and your control over tense and subject-verb agreement is generally strong. There are minor slips, such as 'I appeared for the entrance test... that I have successfully cleared yesterday' (the use of present perfect with a specific past time marker 'yesterday' is incorrect; it should be simple past 'cleared'). Additionally, there is a minor punctuation error at the end of the second paragraph where a comma is used instead of a full stop. However, these errors are infrequent and do not hinder understanding.
