Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter to reqest you to reduce my working hours as I want to complete my study on other hours.

The reason for working part time is that I am studying my accupuncture course which is approx six months long. Moreover, it has not only theoritical classes but also have practical labs. That is why I need more hours for preparing my course.

For my availibility, I like to work on three days of the week monday, wednesday and friday on 8.30am to 2.30pm.

This study will definitely beneficial for my current workplace. As currently, I am working in multispeciality physiotherapy clinic after finishing this course, I would not only treat clients with only physical condition but will also with musculoskeletal condition. This couse will bring more clients in future.

I hope you consider my application. I am looking forward to hearing from you.

Yours Faithfully,

Pragati Nanera.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The letter addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly state the reason for the request (acupuncture studies), specify the desired working hours (Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, 8:30 am to 2:30 pm), and explain the benefit to your employer (expanding the clinic's services to include musculoskeletal conditions). The tone is appropriate for a formal business letter. However, the development of ideas is somewhat brief. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on how the new skills will specifically integrate into the clinic's daily operations to provide a more persuasive argument for your employer.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with clear paragraphing, which helps the reader follow your request. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'That is why', and 'As currently' to link your ideas. However, the flow is occasionally slightly mechanical. For instance, the transition between the explanation of your studies and your availability could be smoother. Additionally, the use of referencing is generally clear, though some sentences are quite short and choppy, which limits the overall cohesion of the text. Using a wider variety of linking words would improve the flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using topic-specific terms like 'multispeciality physiotherapy clinic' and 'musculoskeletal condition'. However, there are several spelling errors, such as 'reqest', 'accupuncture', 'theoritical', and 'couse', which detract from the professional quality of the letter. Furthermore, some word choices are slightly imprecise, such as 'complete my study on other hours' or 'availibility'. Improving your spelling and using more precise collocations would significantly enhance your score in this criterion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the reader's understanding. For example, 'I am studying my accupuncture course which is approx six months long' lacks a comma, and 'it has not only theoritical classes but also have practical labs' contains a subject-verb agreement error. Additionally, 'I would not only treat clients with only physical condition but will also with musculoskeletal condition' is clunky and grammatically incorrect. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of prepositions will help you achieve a higher score.
