Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Boss,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to talk about my working hours to get my higher education as a part time.

I have been working with the company for long time now, and i have thought that I want to upgrade myself to achieve my future goals. I am planning to enroll in a university for my further studies in the same field of computer science. So, I will not be able to work during weekdays except Friday, I can only work on weekends and holidays as well. If there is some important meetings or seminars in our office, I can join you via online platform.

Moreover, I have always wanted to get higher education in my sector, which will also help me and our company to grow better. This upgrade program at university can increase my knowledge in this current scenario of AI data base, as well as it will enhance my ability to understand more about software languages.

I look forward to hearing from your side.

Your faithfully,

Jaimin Padhiyar.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain the reason for the request (further studies in computer science), specify the desired working hours (weekends and holidays), and describe the benefits to the employer (AI database knowledge and software language skills). The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter to a boss. However, the development of ideas is somewhat brief. To reach a higher band, you could provide more specific details about how your new skills would be applied to current company projects, rather than keeping the benefits somewhat general.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'So', though the transition between sentences could be smoother. The referencing is generally clear, although the flow between the second and third paragraphs is slightly abrupt. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different requirements of the task, which helps the reader follow your argument effectively.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'enroll', 'upgrade program', and 'sector'. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'talk about my working hours' (which is slightly informal) and 'upgrade myself' (which is not a standard collocation in this context). While you successfully convey your meaning, the vocabulary is somewhat basic and lacks the precision or sophistication required for higher bands. Expanding your use of professional collocations would improve your score in this area.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'If there is some important meetings... I can join you'. However, there are several grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement ('there is some important meetings' should be 'there are'), capitalization issues ('i' instead of 'I'), and awkward phrasing ('to get my higher education as a part time'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and article usage would be beneficial.
