Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Ms. Denu,

I am writing this letter to update you about change in my availability effective 29th August.

I recently got enrolled in a practical nursing course which is starting this fall. Therefore, I am planning to give more time to my studies as nursing is a hard course and asks for more time and requires more concentration. Furthermore, my schedule has came and my classes are scheduled five days a week. so, I am only available to work part time.

Additionally, i would like to request for weekend shifts mostly 9-5 as commuting to work will be convenient for me. However, I can work on Tuesday as well if you need me. Along side this, I am also attaching my schedule with this email for your future reference.

I would sincerely request your cooperation with my availability as this would benefit the organization in long term. As you know, Not only the organization has few number of nurses working morning shifts but also it is very difficult to arrange someone to do night shifts. So, we need more healthcare professionals in near future.

Thankyou for your solicit cooperation.

Your Faithfully

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain the reason for the request (nursing studies), specify the desired hours (weekends 9-5, with potential for Tuesday), and describe the benefit to the employer (addressing the shortage of healthcare professionals). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a supervisor. To reach a higher band, ensure that the connection between your studies and the employer's benefit is more explicitly linked to the specific skills you are acquiring, rather than just general staffing needs.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'Additionally', and 'However' to link ideas. However, the paragraphing is slightly inconsistent, and some transitions feel a bit mechanical. The flow between the request for hours and the justification for the employer could be smoother. Ensure that each paragraph has a clear central theme to improve the overall progression of your argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'availability', 'convenient', and 'cooperation'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'asks for more time' (should be 'requires') and 'solicit cooperation' (which is slightly unnatural in this context). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands. Expanding your use of professional collocations would enhance the quality of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'my schedule has came' (should be 'has come'), 'Not only the organization has' (incorrect inversion), and 'Your Faithfully' (should be 'Yours faithfully'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some issues with capitalization (e.g., 'i' instead of 'I'). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and standard formal letter conventions.
