Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The letter addresses all three bullet points: the reason for the request, the preferred hours, and the benefit to the employer. However, the response is significantly under the 150-word minimum, which limits the development of ideas. The explanation of how French studies would benefit the employer is somewhat superficial. To improve, you should expand on how your language skills would specifically increase sales or improve customer service, and ensure you meet the length requirement to allow for a more professional and persuasive tone.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The letter is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and limited (e.g., 'Furthermore', 'In addition'). There are also issues with referencing and sentence flow, such as the abrupt transition in the first paragraph. To improve, try to use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that your sentences connect more naturally to one another to create a smoother, more professional flow.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is basic and repetitive, which limits the professional tone required for a formal letter to a boss. There are several spelling errors, such as 'writting', 'consinder', 'nable', 'frech', 'availble', 'benefical', and 'promotiton'. These errors occasionally impede readability. To improve, you should focus on learning the correct spelling of common business-related terms and attempt to use more precise vocabulary, such as 'professional development' instead of 'frech classes' or 'peak periods' instead of 'rush peak'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response relies heavily on simple sentence structures, and there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. Examples include 'request this letter to consinder my job as a part time', 'due joing the frech classes', and 'many customers are uable to english'. These errors, particularly the missing verbs and incorrect prepositions, make the text difficult to follow at times. To improve, focus on basic sentence construction, subject-verb agreement, and proofreading for missing words like 'to' or 'speak'.
