Student answer (Band 6.5)

Hey Martin,

Hope you are doing well. As discussion earlier regarding my interest in business management, I have enrolled in a recent program for continuing my diploma in Business managemnt in Conestoga College this summer. The program is going to be tedious hence, I will not be able to invest in a full-time job anymore. I would like to be a part-time employee.

I believe that this new program will give me more exposure and knowledge about subjects that I can put into my growth in this firm moreover I am also looking to get promoted and managethe whole departmnet of procurement once after I graduate the program.

Additionally as I am aware of the process and functioning of our office, I will be able to easily implement more to the growth rather than an outsider who will be hired. My availability once after entering the program would be only evenings on thursday and friday because of the workload.

Hope you would agree with my request and approve.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt: explaining the reason for the request, specifying the desired hours, and highlighting the benefits to the employer. The tone is generally appropriate for a professional request, although it leans slightly informal with the opening 'Hey Martin'. The ideas are relevant, though the explanation of how the studies benefit the employer could be more explicitly linked to specific skills gained. Overall, the response fulfills the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, each serving a clear purpose. There is a progression of ideas from the request to the justification and finally the availability. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and occasionally awkward, such as 'moreover I am also looking' and 'once after'. While the paragraphing is sufficient, the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to create a more natural, professional tone.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, but there are several spelling errors ('managemnt', 'departmnet') and some imprecise word choices, such as 'tedious' to describe a program, which usually carries a negative connotation. The phrase 'invest in a full-time job' is also slightly unnatural in this context. While the student attempts to use professional terminology like 'procurement' and 'implement', the overall range is limited and lacks the sophistication required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'As discussion earlier' (should be 'As discussed earlier') and 'once after I graduate the program' (should be 'once I graduate from the program'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with missing commas after introductory phrases. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score in this criterion.
