Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear John,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing to request my hours from 40 hours per week to 20 hours that would be part-time starting from next month.
I am planning to enrol in bridging program at Toronto university for Registered Pharmacists. This course would help me to crack my PEBC exam with profound knowledge and requires full time involvement.
I would be able to work only on weekends as it is going to be synchronous classes.
As of now, My job as pharmacy assistant would work as a Source of Practice by closely monitoring medication management as well as patient care. This would not only be beneficial for me but also, In future, I would be able to join our team again as full time Pharmacist.
It would be really helpful if you could approve my request and let me know if you would like me to submit any documentation.
Thanking you in advance,
bhduyg

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly state the reason for the request (enrolling in a bridging program), specify the desired hours (weekends only), and explain the benefit to the employer (applying practical knowledge to patient care and future full-time potential). The tone is appropriate for a formal request to a manager. To improve, ensure that the opening sentence is grammatically complete; for example, 'I am writing to request a reduction in my hours' would be more precise than 'I am writing to request my hours'. Overall, the task is fully accomplished.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use some cohesive devices like 'As of now' and 'not only... but also' to link ideas. However, the transition between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, and the progression of ideas is logical throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary relevant to the professional context, such as 'enrol', 'bridging program', 'synchronous', and 'medication management'. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'crack my PEBC exam' (which is informal; 'pass' or 'successfully complete' would be better) and 'profound knowledge' (which is slightly unnatural in this context). Despite these minor inaccuracies, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly and professionally.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are some grammatical slips. For instance, 'I am writing to request my hours from 40 hours per week to 20 hours' is missing a verb like 'reduce'. Additionally, there are some punctuation and capitalization errors, such as 'My job' (capitalized mid-sentence) and 'In future' (capitalized mid-sentence). Despite these errors, the grammatical control is generally good, and the mistakes do not impede communication.
