Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 1.0

The response is completely off-topic. The task required a formal letter to a boss requesting a reduction in working hours to study part-time. Instead, the student wrote an essay about the negative impact of technology and social media on tourism. Because the response fails to address any of the bullet points or the communicative purpose of the prompt, it cannot be assessed as a successful completion of the task. It does not follow the required letter format, nor does it address the specific scenario provided.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The text is organized into two paragraphs, but the logical progression is weak. While there is an attempt to use cohesive devices such as 'To commence' and 'As a result', the connection between ideas is often strained. The transition between the introduction and the body paragraph is abrupt, and the overall structure does not reflect the requirements of a letter. The use of referencing is occasionally unclear, particularly when discussing the cousin's experience, which feels like an anecdotal insertion rather than a cohesive argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is somewhat limited and occasionally inaccurate. Phrases like 'burgeoning number of people' and 'relishing those precious moments' show an attempt to use more sophisticated language, but there are errors in collocation and word choice, such as 'a ignorance' (should be 'an ignorance') and 'varied natural place' (should be 'places'). The vocabulary is repetitive in places, and the range is not sufficient to demonstrate a high level of control, especially given the misuse of terms in the context of the essay.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. There are issues with article usage ('a ignorance'), subject-verb agreement, and sentence structure. For example, the opening sentence is a fragment rather than a complete sentence. While there is an attempt to use complex structures, they are often faulty, such as 'merely occupied with the stress of posting visually perfect on social media'. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with unnecessary capitalization and comma usage issues throughout the text.
