Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Mr. Smith,
I am writing to you formally request regarding reducing my hours for temporary basis because I want to enroll myself for the Artificial Intelligence classes.
As a matter of fact, Information Technology industry is changing with the development of AI. So, it is extremely important that we should update ourselves timely. Therefore, I am interested to join Six months AI crash course to learn AI tools and get ready myself for the near future.
I have checked most of the classes are in the afternoon from Monday to Friday. This program going to start next month and it will be hard for me to manage classes with 40 hours full time job. So, it is requested to reduce my working hours from 40 to 30, so that I can fully concentrate on this course. Primarily, I want to work in the morning shift so that by afternoon I can windup my job duties.
It is highly beneficial to introduce the AI tools in our work which will surely help to fasten the task with quality. For example, Claude AI helps our Engineering team to write source code in no time along with Chat GPT can be helpful for Project Managers to plan their days and projects and providing updates to the clients in a more efficient way.
If you want to discuss more about its benefit and how I will manage my work then we can have a meeting at your earlies convenience.
I am looking forward to your reply.
Yours Sincerely,
Jonna Jennifer

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have addressed all three bullet points of the prompt: explaining the reason for the request, specifying the desired hours, and detailing the benefits to the employer. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter. However, the development of ideas is slightly uneven. While the benefits of AI are mentioned, the connection to your specific role could be more explicit to make the argument more persuasive. The purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning, and you maintain a consistent position throughout the response.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter follows a logical structure, with each paragraph focusing on a specific aspect of the request. You use a variety of cohesive devices such as 'As a matter of fact', 'Therefore', and 'For example' to link your ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing, such as the phrase 'This program going to start', which lacks a clear link to the previous sentence. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the introduction, the request, the benefits, and the closing, which helps the reader follow your argument easily.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, including topic-specific terms like 'Information Technology', 'Artificial Intelligence', and 'source code'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'get ready myself' (should be 'prepare myself') and 'fasten the task' (should be 'expedite the task' or 'speed up the task'). Despite these minor slips, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly and professionally throughout the letter.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors that persist. For example, 'I am writing to you formally request' is missing a preposition ('to'), and 'This program going to start' is missing an auxiliary verb ('is'). Additionally, 'at your earlies convenience' contains a spelling error. While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. To reach a higher band, focus on ensuring subject-verb agreement and correct verb tense usage in complex sentences.
