Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Pooja,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing to request a change to my current schedule to reduce my working hours, because i would like to start study part time while handling this job. I think this would be great opportunity to make my future more bright towards this company.

I would like to work from 8 AM to 2 PM from Monday to Friday. Hence, my college is offering an evening classes regarding business management course, which is difficult to handle with full time job. This subject is extremely beneficial to increase my level of learning towards my current job as well.

In addition to this, business management course would be incredibly helpful for your organization

for long term. As, it prioritize to teach about managing to business including cost, saving time, profit and loss and better planning. So, I would like to pursue it, if you could let me know whether to change my schedule about my current work.

I look forward to your response and hope to enroll in this course soon.

Sincerely,

Navneet Kaur.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly state the reason for the request (part-time study), specify the desired working hours (8 AM to 2 PM), and explain the benefits to the employer (business management skills). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. To reach a higher band, ensure that the connection between your studies and the employer's benefit is more explicitly developed; for instance, you could mention specific skills like 'financial analysis' or 'operational efficiency' rather than general terms. Overall, the task is fully addressed with a clear purpose and consistent tone throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. You use some cohesive devices such as 'In addition to this' and 'Hence' to link ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or forced, such as the start of the third paragraph. The progression of ideas is generally smooth, but the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that referencing (e.g., 'it' in 'it prioritize to teach') clearly points to the intended noun. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'enroll', 'pursue', and 'organization'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'make my future more bright' (should be 'brighter') and 'managing to business' (should be 'business management'). While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the vocabulary from being considered 'flexible' or 'precise'. To improve, focus on using more natural collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing when describing the benefits of your course.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. However, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'i would like to start study' (should be 'studying'), 'an evening classes' (should be 'evening classes'), and 'As, it prioritize' (should be 'As it prioritizes'). These errors are frequent but do not significantly impede the reader's understanding. To achieve a higher score, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles. Increasing the variety of complex sentence structures while maintaining accuracy will also help improve your score.
