Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Manager,
The primary reason for writing this letter is that I want to reduce my regular working hours as I have enrolled myself for part-time accounting course which is starting in coming weeks. As per my schedule, the classes will be on weekdays from 3 to 10pm due to which it would be really challenging for me to stay until 5pm.
After proper consideration, I came up with few recommendations regarding my operational hours which are whether from 7 to 12pm or if not then from 9 to 3pm.
Moreover, I believe that pursuing advance accounting course will be highly beneficial for organization as well. Firstly, it will enable me to understand the financial market in better way, resulting in few errors. Secondly, better understanding of finance will enable me to handle the complex situations in a appropriate way which will save crucial time and energy which can be dedicated to other work.
Thank you for your time, consideration, and understanding. I sincerely appreciate your assistance and look forward to your favorable response.
Yours sincerely
Harshita Dhawan

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter successfully covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly explain the reason for the request (enrolling in an accounting course), specify the desired working hours, and provide a logical argument for how the employer will benefit from your new skills. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. To reach a higher band, ensure that the connection between your studies and the employer's benefit is more explicitly detailed; for example, mentioning specific accounting software or financial reporting tasks would strengthen the argument further.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use cohesive devices such as 'Firstly' and 'Secondly' to structure your arguments effectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different requirements of the task. However, some transitions could be smoother; for instance, the transition between the request for hours and the benefits of the course could be more fluid. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow throughout the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'proper consideration' and 'crucial time and energy' are used effectively. There are some minor errors in collocation and article usage, such as 'enrolled myself for part-time accounting course' (missing 'a') and 'in better way' (missing 'a'). While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, incorporating more precise professional terminology related to accounting or business management would help elevate the lexical range to a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. Most sentences are clear, though there are some grammatical slips, such as 'I came up with few recommendations' (should be 'a few') and 'in a appropriate way' (should be 'an appropriate'). Additionally, there is a minor error in 'starting in coming weeks' (should be 'the coming weeks'). Despite these occasional errors, the meaning is never obscured, and the grammar is generally controlled enough to maintain professional communication.
