Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Mr. Maann,

i am writing to formally request a reduction in my working hours,-from full-time to a part-time schedule, in order to pursue a part time master's degree in data analytics ,which commences next month.

Specifically, i would like to propose working from 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM, Monday through Friday, totaling 25 hours per week . This schedule would allow me to attend my afternoon classes and labs while ensuring I am present during our core morning meeting hours.

I am confident that this arrangement would not only benefit my personal development but also bring significant value to our team. The advanced

analytical skills and new software proficiencies , i will gain are directly applicable tom our current reporting systems.i plan to implement these insights to streamline our monthly performance dashboards, ultimately saving the department time and improving the accuracy of our forecasters .

I am happy to discuss a transition plan and ensure my current projects are handed over smoothly .i hope you will consider my request.

yours sincerely,

harvinder singh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained the reason for the request (pursuing a Master's degree), specified the desired working hours (8:00 AM to 2:00 PM), and provided a persuasive argument regarding how your studies would benefit the employer through improved analytical skills and dashboard efficiency. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager, and the purpose is clear from the outset. The ideas are well-developed and directly relevant to the task requirements, demonstrating a professional approach to the request.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph serving a distinct purpose. You use clear paragraphing to separate your request, the proposed schedule, the benefits to the company, and the closing. Cohesive devices such as 'Specifically', 'This schedule', and 'not only... but also' are used effectively to link ideas. The progression of information is smooth, leading the reader naturally from the request to the justification and finally to the proposed transition plan. The structure is coherent and easy to follow throughout.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a professional context, such as 'formally request', 'commences', 'analytical skills', and 'streamline'. There are a few minor errors, such as the typo 'tom' instead of 'to' and the slightly awkward phrasing 'accuracy of our forecasters' (where 'forecasting' would be more precise). However, these do not impede communication. You show an ability to use topic-specific vocabulary related to data analytics, which adds to the professional tone of the letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. While there are some punctuation errors, such as the inconsistent capitalization of 'i' and 'harvinder singh', and some spacing issues around commas and periods, the grammatical control is generally strong. Most sentences are error-free, and the complex structures used to explain the benefits of your studies are well-constructed. The minor slips in punctuation and capitalization are non-systematic and do not interfere with the clarity of your message.
