Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear sir,

I hope you're doing well. I am writing a letter to inform you that I have taken studies as Master of Business Administrations.

I want you to reduce my working hours because I have classes 3 days a week in the morning as well as the course has an multiple assignments.

Moreover, I am willing to work in the evening from 4 PM to 9 PM for rest of the days as in the morning I feel fresh to do my class work and I feel free in the evening to work in the office.

If I talk about the benefits of my part time studies to you. It has a plenty of advantages such as I would learn new skills to uplift your business.

If you deduct my working hours, I will concentrate more on my studies and would be able to do more for the business. I appreciate your understanding and I eagerly wait for your response.

Your Sincerely,

Sandeep Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt: explaining the reason for the request, specifying the desired hours, and describing the benefits to the employer. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter to a boss. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the explanation of how the MBA will benefit the employer is quite vague, stating only that you would 'learn new skills' without specifying how these skills apply to your current role. To improve, provide more concrete examples of how your studies will add value to the company.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure of your request. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Moreover' and 'If I talk about', to transition between ideas. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical or slightly unnatural, such as 'If I talk about the benefits...'. The flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that referencing is more precise. Overall, the message is easy to follow, but the cohesion lacks the sophistication required for a higher band.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'inform', 'willing', and 'appreciate'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, 'I have taken studies as Master of Business Administrations' is grammatically awkward; it would be better to say 'I have enrolled in an MBA program'. Additionally, 'an multiple assignments' is incorrect as 'multiple' is plural. Expanding your vocabulary to include more precise professional terminology would help elevate your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors. Examples include 'I am writing a letter to inform you' (a bit redundant), 'an multiple assignments' (article error), and 'Your Sincerely' (incorrect closing phrase; it should be 'Yours sincerely'). There are also issues with subject-verb agreement and preposition usage. To reach a higher band, focus on proofreading for basic errors and incorporating more varied, error-free complex sentence structures.
