Student answer (Band 6.0)

Hello Sir,

I am writing this letter in regards to working hours of my job. My name is Arikaben Sanjaykumar Patel, and I am working at your pharmacy as a full-time pharamacy assistant. I am planning to study in this summer intake, because of which I would like you to convert me as a part-time employee, so that I can focus on my study and can able to manage both of them simultaneously.

I would like to work mostly on weekend, as I will be free during those days and then probably I can able to work 2 days in a week.

I have choose this study because after completing this course I can able to give my pharmacy exam which can be beneficial for my future. I would like to give my best at the pharmacy and I think that this course will give an better idea about the medications and prescriptions later on.

Hoping for a kind consideration regarding the working hours.

Yours sincerely,

Arika

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly state the reason for the request (part-time study), specify the desired hours (weekends), and explain the benefit to the employer (better knowledge of medications). However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For example, the explanation of how your studies benefit the employer is quite general. To reach a higher band, you should provide more specific details about how your increased knowledge will improve your performance as a pharmacy assistant. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter to a manager, though the opening 'Hello Sir' is slightly informal; 'Dear Manager' or 'Dear Mr./Ms. [Name]' would be more professional.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific requirement of the task. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'because of which' and 'as', which help the flow of ideas. However, the transitions between sentences are sometimes a bit mechanical or repetitive. For instance, the phrase 'I can able to' is used multiple times, which disrupts the natural progression of the text. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence that guides the reader through your request.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'simultaneously', 'prescriptions', and 'medications'. However, there are several instances of word-choice errors and awkward phrasing, such as 'convert me as a part-time employee' (should be 'change my status to part-time') and 'I have choose this study' (should be 'I have chosen this course'). These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision of your writing. Expanding your vocabulary to include more professional collocations would help elevate your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good. However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the letter. The most persistent error is the incorrect use of 'can able to', which is redundant; you should use either 'can' or 'am able to'. Additionally, there are issues with verb tenses and subject-verb agreement, such as 'I have choose' instead of 'I have chosen' and 'an better idea' instead of 'a better idea'. While these errors rarely prevent the reader from understanding your message, they occur frequently enough to impact the overall accuracy of your writing.
