Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mr.Bob,

I am writing this letter in concern regarding hours of work I am doing in your company .Actually I had decieded to learn french language for my career goal and to maintain my communication level with all the people in this french dominant country. Whereas, I am working full time in your company from 9am to 6pm Monday to Friday ,which is one of the busiest time for all the weeks .However, this time zone of work create a hinder to join my french classes which i supposed to join 3.30pm regularly.

Because of this, I want to request you to modify my working hours for 9am to 3pm every day in that way i can perform on both areas with equal potential. However ,learning french as part time not only will help me in to better version of me but also it could help my performance in your company to deal with french salesman and customer to make good connection with company. I hope you would understand my situation and i will wait for your response.

your faithfully,

Ekam

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt: the reason for the request, the preferred hours, and the benefit to the employer. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal request. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While you mention that learning French will help with customers, this could be expanded further to explain how it would specifically improve business operations. The structure is clear, and the purpose of the letter is immediately apparent to the reader, fulfilling the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organized into a clear beginning, middle, and end. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Because of this' and 'However' to link ideas. However, the flow is occasionally interrupted by awkward phrasing and punctuation errors, such as the misuse of 'Whereas' at the start of a sentence. Paragraphing is present but could be more distinct to separate the different points of the letter. The transition between the request for hours and the benefits to the company is functional, but the overall progression could be smoother with more varied linking words.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message, including terms like 'modify', 'potential', and 'communication level'. However, there are several instances of unnatural collocation and word choice, such as 'in concern regarding' instead of 'concerning' or 'regarding', and 'hinder' used as a noun instead of 'hindrance'. Some phrasing is repetitive, and there are minor errors in word formation (e.g., 'french dominant country'). To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise collocations and ensuring that your vocabulary choices sound natural in a professional context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an ability to use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ('this time zone of work create'), tense inconsistencies ('I had decieded'), and missing articles ('learn french language'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with spacing around commas and periods. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your request, they occur frequently enough to impact the overall fluency of the writing. Focusing on basic sentence construction and proofreading for small errors will help improve your score.
