Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

I am Harneet ,One of the Front End Associate at your store. I am writing to kindly request you to shorten my hours of working as I am planning to enrol in short - term pharmacy assistant course.

It is evident that healthcare sector is gaining popularity at present scenario owing to which I want to pursue my studies under this targeted sector. With regards to my availability , I would open to work on weekends including Friday and able to work after 3 on Thursday. Following this schedule, I would able to balance my work with study.

The reason that why I am taking this course is not only getting job in priority sector but also it would benefit my current job. Additionally, being a pharmacy assistant I would get hands on knowledge of medications, health and safety standards along with first-aid training. Consequently, I would use all my skills and knowledge at our store whenever it required.

I would look forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely,

Harneet kaur.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly state the reason for the request (enrolling in a pharmacy assistant course), specify your desired working hours (weekends and Thursday afternoons), and explain the benefits to your employer (gaining knowledge in health and safety and first-aid). The tone is appropriate for a formal request to a manager. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning to the end.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Additionally', 'Consequently', and 'Following this schedule' to link your ideas. However, the flow is occasionally interrupted by minor grammatical errors that affect the smoothness of the sentences. The progression of ideas is logical, moving from the request to the schedule and finally the benefits. To reach a higher band, ensure that transitions between sentences are more seamless and avoid repetitive phrasing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'enrol', 'pursue', and 'healthcare sector'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'at present scenario' (should be 'in the current scenario') and 'hands on knowledge' (should be 'hands-on knowledge'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise collocation. You successfully convey your message, but the vocabulary is somewhat functional rather than sophisticated.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical slips, such as missing articles ('One of the Front End Associate' should be 'one of the Front End Associates'), missing verbs ('I would open' should be 'I would be open'), and awkward phrasing ('The reason that why I am taking'). While these errors are frequent, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your request. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles will significantly improve your accuracy.
