Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to inform you that i want to reduce my working hours as i want to study further.

I wanted to reduce my working hours in our organization and want to study further in my HR skills. I am working as an HR executive in the company but i want to see myself as an HR manager in next five years, so i want to give exam of CHRP which gains my knowledge in HR field. Moreover it also benefits to our company like i will manage the whole department and financial goals for the organization.

So for the next few months i would love to work between morning 8 to 2 in the afternoon, so that i can focus in my studies also.

I hope you will understand and give me a chance to work on my self development.

I am waiting for your positive answer

Thank you

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points required by the task: explaining the reason for the request, specifying the desired hours, and describing the benefits to the employer. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter to a boss. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the explanation of how your studies would benefit the company is quite brief and could be expanded with more specific details about how the CHRP certification would directly improve your performance or the company's operations. To improve, ensure each point is fully elaborated to demonstrate a clear and professional rationale for your request.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter follows a logical structure with a clear opening, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'so that' to link ideas. However, the paragraphing is slightly disjointed, and the transition between the purpose of the letter and the specific request could be smoother. Some sentences are a bit repetitive in structure, which affects the flow. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensure that each paragraph has a clear, singular focus that transitions naturally into the next.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have an adequate range of vocabulary to convey your message, such as 'organization', 'executive', and 'self-development'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'give exam of CHRP' (should be 'take the CHRP exam') and 'gains my knowledge' (should be 'enhances my knowledge'). The vocabulary is functional but lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher bands. To improve, focus on learning common collocations related to professional requests and business contexts, and ensure you use verbs that accurately reflect your intended meaning.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors throughout the text. These include consistent failure to capitalize the personal pronoun 'I', missing articles (e.g., 'in next five years' should be 'in the next five years'), and minor punctuation issues. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your request, they are frequent enough to impact the overall accuracy of the writing. To improve, pay closer attention to basic grammar rules, specifically subject-verb agreement, capitalization, and the correct use of articles in professional writing.
