Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt: explaining the reason for the request, specifying the desired hours, and describing the benefits to the employer. However, the development of these points is somewhat limited. For example, the explanation of the benefits is quite general, and the description of the new working hours is slightly confusing and lacks professional clarity. While the tone is appropriate for a formal letter, the ideas could be expanded with more specific details to fully satisfy the requirements of a higher band. The purpose of the letter is clear, but the overall execution is basic.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive (e.g., 'In addition to this', 'Firstly'). There are also instances where the flow between sentences is disjointed, such as the transition between the explanation of the course and the request for time off. The referencing is occasionally unclear, making some sentences feel like a list of points rather than a cohesive argument. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between ideas would significantly enhance the readability of the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task but remains quite simple and repetitive. Phrases like 'doing work' and 'have so many' are basic and lack the precision expected in a professional context. There are also minor errors in word choice, such as 'foe extend' (likely a typo for 'to extend') and 'with any one help' (which is unclear). While the student attempts to use some topic-specific vocabulary like 'business management' and 'leadership', the overall range is limited. To improve, the student should focus on using more precise professional collocations and avoiding informal phrasing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow. Common issues include missing articles ('I have taken business management course'), incorrect verb forms ('I will able handle'), and punctuation errors, such as inconsistent spacing before commas and periods. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. The student should focus on subject-verb agreement, correct article usage, and ensuring that complex sentences are constructed accurately.
