Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear mr. sharma

I am writing to request you to reduce my working hours from next month onwards.

actually, I am planning to start my Cost control course and study part time for next three months . This would require me to have some extra time to pay attention to my academics along with managing my work life.

As you know, right now i have been working from 9am to 5pm every monday to saturday. I would appreciate it if you could change this to 9am to 3pm only weekdays so i can get day off for weekend.

This will allow me to get more knowledge about finance not only for my personal skill develpment but also for company which i can apply to have more profits and manage the cost.

I hope you will understand this and make a decision.

i look forward to hear from you.

yours sincerely

kamal

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly state the reason for the request (a Cost Control course), specify the desired hours (9am to 3pm, weekdays), and explain the benefit to the employer (applying financial knowledge to increase profits and manage costs). The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter to a boss, although the opening and closing could be more professional. The ideas are relevant and sufficiently developed to meet the task requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific requirement of the prompt. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat limited and occasionally mechanical. For example, the transition between the request and the explanation could be smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate, but the overall flow would benefit from a wider variety of linking words (e.g., 'consequently', 'furthermore', 'in addition to this') to connect sentences more fluidly.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'academics', 'managing', and 'development'. However, there are some spelling errors ('develpment') and minor inaccuracies in word choice or collocation, such as 'get day off for weekend' which should be 'get the weekends off'. The vocabulary is functional and allows you to convey your message clearly, but it lacks the sophistication and precision required for a higher band score. Expanding your range of professional collocations would be beneficial.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors, particularly regarding capitalization ('mr. sharma', 'i', 'monday', 'saturday') and punctuation. Additionally, there are minor errors in article usage and verb forms, such as 'I look forward to hear from you' (should be 'to hearing'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on proofreading for basic mechanics will significantly improve your accuracy.
