IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You would like to reduce your working hours in order to study part time.

Write a letter to your boss. In your letter

  • explain why you want to reduce your working hours
  • say which hours you would like to work
  • describe how your part-time studies would benefit your employer

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Mr. Sharma,

I am writing to request reduction in my working hours, since I am pursuing the EMR(Emergency Medical Responder) course.

EMR is a 21-day course that requires to attend classes regularly. When I enrolled myself for the course, I was thinking that I could manage my study with the job. However, the classes are demanding and long which leaves little or no time to complete my entire shift.

I understand that the store needs the night manager to perform all closing duties. So, I was wondering if you could schedule me from 6:30 pm to 10:30 pm instead of 2:00 pm to 10:30 pm. This change will allow me to manage both my studies and my night manager's duties.

The store often needs a person who can provide first-aid in an emergency, and it is a part of my duties as a night manager to ensure everyone's safety. So, this course will give me access to response to an emergency appropatiely.

I hope you will consider my request favorably. Please let me know if you want me to fill out availability form. I look forward to your prompt response.

Yours sincerely,

Parvinderjeet

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained the reason for the request (the EMR course), specified the desired working hours (6:30 pm to 10:30 pm), and articulated how the employer would benefit from your training (first-aid capabilities). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager, and the purpose is clear from the outset. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the context provided. To reach a higher band, ensure that the connection between the course and the employer's benefit is slightly more explicit, perhaps by highlighting how this reduces the company's liability or improves safety standards.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a formal closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use some cohesive devices such as 'However', 'So', and 'instead of' to link ideas. To improve, try to use a wider variety of linking words and transition phrases to create a smoother flow between sentences. For example, instead of starting multiple sentences with 'So', you could use 'Consequently' or 'As a result' to vary the structure and enhance the professional tone.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to communicate your request clearly. Phrases like 'pursuing the course', 'manage my study', and 'consider my request favorably' are well-chosen and appropriate for the context. There are a few minor errors, such as 'requires to attend' (should be 'requires attending') and 'appropatiely' (spelling error). While the vocabulary is adequate, incorporating more precise collocations or slightly more sophisticated professional terminology would elevate your score. Overall, the language is clear and the meaning is never obscured by the minor slips present.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are clear and grammatically sound. However, there are some minor errors, such as 'requires to attend' instead of 'requires attending' or 'requires that I attend', and the phrasing 'I was thinking that I could manage my study with the job' is slightly informal. Additionally, there is a minor punctuation/article slip in 'fill out availability form' (should be 'the availability form'). Despite these, your control of grammar is generally good, and the errors do not impede communication or cause confusion for the reader.
