Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mr. Sharma,

I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to request you for lowering my work hours as I want to enrol in a part time study course.

The reason for reducing my work hour is time that I have to spend for self-study. Although the course in which I want to get enrolled requires me to attend classes only for two hours daily, I need to put extra efforts for better results.

I would be appreciated if afternoon schedule is assigned for me as I might be going to collage in the morning. I have already talked to Robin and he agreed to start working early in the morning. So every thing would be working as same as in daily routine except me.

My part-time studies might also be beneficial for the company as my course is related to occupational health and safety. By knowing every aspect of how a task is completed without puting anything on risk, I may be able to work more efficiently and increase productivity.

Thanks for your time and consideration.

Yours sincerely,

Dharmveer Singh.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt effectively. You clearly explain the need for reduced hours, specify the desired schedule, and provide a logical benefit to the employer regarding occupational health and safety. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. The ideas are well-developed and relevant, ensuring the reader understands your request and the reasoning behind it. To reach a higher band, ensure that the connection between your studies and the company's productivity is even more explicitly linked to specific workplace tasks.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a formal closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your argument. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Although', 'So', and 'By knowing', which help link your ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. For instance, the transition between discussing your schedule and the benefits of your study could be more fluid to improve the overall cohesion of the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'enrol', 'occupational health and safety', and 'productivity'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'request you for lowering' (should be 'request a reduction in') and 'puting anything on risk' (should be 'putting anything at risk'). Additionally, there is a spelling error ('collage' instead of 'college'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise control over word choice and spelling to reach a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the conditional 'if afternoon schedule is assigned' and the concessive clause 'Although the course... requires me to'. However, there are several grammatical inaccuracies, including 'I would be appreciated' (should be 'I would appreciate it'), 'every thing would be working as same as' (should be 'everything would work the same as'), and 'lowering my work hours' (should be 'reducing my working hours'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your message.
