Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mr Patel,

I am writing this letter to request you for reducing my working hours as I recently have done admission in Pharmacy Technician course. My starting date of this course will be on 1st week of September 2026.

At the moment, I am working full time as 40 hours per week. I am requesting to reduce my hours 30 per week. As my tutor said i have to attend online session for 2 hours every tuesday. Moreover, she gives one week to complete off job tasks such as assignments and worksheets .Therefore if there is availability of other staff please allow me for day off on tuesday and saturday. So i can fully prepare myself for my better performance.

In addition to,this Pharmacy technician course will give me fully accredited registration. I can legally work as Pharmacy Technician which will ultimately benefit to your business as well. The work of pharmacist will be reduced by helping them to check priscriptions and give better service to patients.

I hope you will approve this request. I am waiting to hear back from you.

Your Sincerely,

Krishna Chauhan

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly explain your reason for the request (the Pharmacy Technician course), specify the desired hours (30 per week), and describe the benefits to your employer (legal accreditation and assistance with prescriptions). The tone is appropriate for a formal request to a manager. To improve, ensure that the connection between your studies and the employer's benefit is more explicitly linked to the specific business environment, as the current explanation is slightly generic. Overall, the task is fully addressed with a clear purpose throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Therefore', and 'In addition to' to connect your ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or are used incorrectly, such as 'In addition to,this'. The flow between sentences is generally smooth, but the progression could be enhanced by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring punctuation around these devices is accurate. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the request, the scheduling details, and the justification.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using terms like 'accredited', 'registration', and 'availability'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'done admission in' (should be 'enrolled in') and 'priscriptions' (spelling error). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your message clearly, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band. To improve, focus on using more natural collocations and ensuring accurate spelling of professional terms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'request you for reducing' (should be 'request to reduce'), 'as 40 hours' (should be 'of 40 hours'), and 'Your Sincerely' (should be 'Yours sincerely'). Additionally, there are issues with article usage and sentence fragments. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your request, they occur frequently enough to impact the overall fluency of the writing. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct preposition usage would significantly improve your accuracy.
