Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing to you requesting to lower my working hours as i am aiming to take a french language test. I will be studying part-time for this test.

As i have received my work-permit, I am taking a step towards completing all the necessary task to apply for my PR application. In regards to that, I have decided to undertake an examination of french language that helps me gain credentials for my PR pathway.Learning a new language while being a full-time employee would be a difficult situation for me, considering that appearing for this test is my only option for guaranteed PR.

I am requesting to be scheduled for the maximum of 3 morning shift on weekdays. I am completely flexible with weekends as I understand that the hotel will be busy during that time.

I would also like to shed light on the fact that upon successful completion of a my test, I will be a proficient french speaker which will help me communicate with our french speaking clientele. This will become a good experience for our guest, resulting good reviews for the hotel.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained the reason for your request (PR application requirements), specified your preferred working hours (three morning shifts on weekdays), and articulated how your studies would benefit the employer (improving communication with French-speaking guests). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the task requirements. To reach a higher band, ensure that your opening and closing salutations are consistent; 'Dear Sir' is acceptable, but using the manager's name if known, or a more standard 'Yours sincerely' for a formal letter, would be more professional.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific requirement of the prompt. The progression of ideas is clear, moving from the request to the justification, the specific schedule, and finally the benefits to the company. You use some cohesive devices such as 'In regards to that' and 'upon successful completion of', which help the flow. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the use of 'a my' in the final paragraph is a minor cohesive error. Overall, the paragraphing is effective and contributes to the clarity of your message.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'credentials', 'PR pathway', and 'proficient'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'completing all the necessary task' (should be plural 'tasks') and 'resulting good reviews' (should be 'resulting in good reviews'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the sophistication or idiomatic precision required for higher bands. Expanding your use of collocations related to professional requests would enhance the quality of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical slips, such as the failure to capitalize 'i' throughout the text, 'a my test' (double article), and 'maximum of 3 morning shift' (should be plural 'shifts'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. Your control over sentence structure is generally good, but more attention to subject-verb agreement and consistent capitalization is needed to reach the next band level. The punctuation is generally functional, though some sentences could be refined for better flow.
