Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear sir,

I am writing this to request to reduce my working hours and assign me with fix schedule because I want to enroll in part time study course for project management.

As a shift leader, currently my working hours are not fixed. Some days I have to work for more than 10 hours and, some days even 12 hours a day.

I acknowledge that this time of the year is a peak time as a sorting company and we have to cover as many hours as we can to meet out yearly target. However, I would like to invest some time in study project management and enhance my team building and time management skills. As a shift leader I have got practical knowledge and real world experience from this job but I believe, theoritical knowledge is also important. If I complete this course, I believe I can significantly improve my skills set, which is altemately benefinital for the growth of the company. The knowledge I would gain from this course can make good impact on my performance in this company. This course is internationally recognised and at the end of the course, I will awarded with International project management certificate. This not only enhance my professional profile as well as is benefitial for company's overall profile.

I am formally requesting you to consider my request and assign me fix schedule of 8 hours daily. So remaining time I can invest on this course.

I am assuring you that my study won't affect my performance on the floor even a slightest bit. You can reach-out to me on [redacted phone] if you require any additional information.

Waiting for your positive response.

Your's Sincerely

Karan Jadav

Shift Leader

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained the reason for your request (enrolling in a project management course), specified the desired schedule (8 hours daily), and articulated the benefits to your employer, such as improved team building and time management skills. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a supervisor. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the context of a workplace request. To reach a higher band, ensure that the connection between your studies and the company's specific needs is even more explicitly linked to show a deeper understanding of the employer's perspective.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the request to the justification and finally to the proposed solution. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the introduction, the body of the argument, and the conclusion. You use some cohesive devices such as 'However', 'If I complete this course', and 'This not only... but also'. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there is occasional repetition of phrasing. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences would enhance the flow of the letter and help achieve a higher band score.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'internationally recognised', 'professional profile', and 'significantly improve'. However, there are several spelling errors ('theoritical', 'altemently', 'benefinital', 'Your's') and some awkward collocations ('assign me with fix schedule'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more careful proofreading. To improve, focus on mastering the spelling of common professional terms and ensuring that word forms (e.g., 'beneficial' vs 'benefitial') are used correctly in context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'If I complete this course, I believe I can significantly improve my skills set'. There are several grammatical slips, such as 'I will awarded' (passive voice error), 'assign me fix schedule' (missing article), and 'even a slightest bit' (incorrect idiom). While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. To progress, focus on consistent use of articles, correct verb forms in passive constructions, and refining your control over complex sentence structures to ensure they are error-free.
