Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir,

I hope you are doing well.

I am writing this letter to kindly request you that I want to reduce my work hours to study part time.

Firstly, I wanted to let you know that I got admission in Vancouver Community College in ECE, for which I have been waiting since last year. That is why it will not be possible for me to continue full time work.

Furthermore, my classes are in the morning. Due to this reason I will not be able to work in the mornings but I will be available for after school care which is from 2pm to 6pm.

Moreover, as for now I am holding responsible adult certificate and working in before and after school care program in your organization. But our institute always need early years educators. So, in future when I will have ECE it will be beneficial for our organization as I am already aware of the company policies and procedures and I will also have the appropriate license to work with young children.

I would appreciate if you allow me to work on my requested hours.

Thank you for understanding my situation. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours faithfully,

David

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained the reason for the request (admission to an ECE program), specified the desired working hours (2pm to 6pm), and articulated the benefit to the employer (gaining a qualified educator familiar with company policies). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a supervisor. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands the situation and the proposed solution. To reach a higher band, ensure that the explanation of the benefit to the employer is slightly more formal and persuasive, as the current phrasing is a bit conversational.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the request to the explanation, the proposed schedule, and finally the benefits. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate these distinct ideas. You have used some cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'Moreover', and 'Due to this reason' to link your sentences. However, some of these transitions feel slightly mechanical. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the flow between sentences is smoother. For example, the transition between the morning classes and the afternoon availability could be more seamlessly integrated.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Terms like 'admission', 'organization', 'policies and procedures', and 'early years educators' are appropriate for the context. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'I am holding responsible adult certificate', which should be 'I hold a Responsible Adult certificate'. Additionally, 'our institute always need' should be 'our institute always needs'. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precision in professional terminology and subject-verb agreement.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical slips. For instance, 'request you that I want to' is awkward; a better phrasing would be 'request to reduce my working hours'. You also have some minor errors in article usage and tense consistency, such as 'in future when I will have ECE'. Despite these errors, your control of grammar is generally good, and the mistakes rarely cause confusion for the reader. Increasing the use of more sophisticated complex structures would help elevate your score.
