Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear boss,
I am writing this letter to you for making a request to you asking for reschedule my timesheet from a full-time worker to a part-time worker.
The reason for this request is that, I have enrolled in a college to learn a French language as a part-time student. This course will help me to boost my score for IRCC nomination that van further help me to secure my status in Canada.
Currently, I'm doing 40 hours per week, i would ask you to please change it to 30 hours per week so that I can continue the course without any stress and distraction of who to manage study and work life. Additionally, I can also look after my bills and needs with the salary i will receive by working as a part-time.
I would also like to bring this to your attention that this will be a benefit for the company too as i will become a permanent resident of this country and can serve the company for long period of time and can give my best without any stress about my status within Canada.
I promise you that the changes will not make in difference in my productivity. looking forward for your positive response.
regards,
Sofia

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have addressed all three bullet points of the task: explaining the reason for the request, specifying the desired hours, and describing the benefits to the employer. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. However, the development of the third point regarding the benefit to the employer is slightly weak; focusing on your personal immigration status as the primary benefit is less persuasive than highlighting how your new skills could contribute to the company's operations. To improve, ensure your arguments are more professional and focused on the employer's perspective.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Additionally' and 'I would also like to bring this to your attention' to link ideas. However, the paragraphing is somewhat inconsistent, and some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The flow between the request for hours and the justification could be smoother. Ensure that each paragraph has a clear central theme to improve the overall structure.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'enrolled', 'nomination', and 'productivity'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'learn a French language' (should be 'learn French') and 'make in difference' (should be 'make a difference'). There is also a minor typo with 'van' instead of 'can'. While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the response from reaching a higher band. Focus on using more natural collocations and proofreading for small slips.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. For example, 'I am writing this letter to you for making a request to you asking for reschedule' is overly wordy and grammatically incorrect. Other issues include 'distraction of who to manage study and work life' and 'for long period of time'. While your meaning is clear, the frequency of these errors in sentence construction and preposition usage limits your score. Try to simplify your sentence structures to ensure accuracy before attempting more complex ones.
