Student answer (Band 6.0)
Hello Miss. Brittany
Hope you are doing well,
I am writing this to request you to decrease my working hours in order to study part time. Currently i am working as Healthcare aid in your facility but in order to enhance my knowledge in the healthcare field, I enrolled in the Licenced Practice nurse at Bow Valley College as a part time student. To fulfill my part time at college i would like reduce my working hours at the facility. Mostly I have classes during the evening, so if you can give me more hours during day time, i will be helpful for both my study and my working time. Furthermore, the facility has benefits from my study for example, i can work as both healthcare aid as well as licenced practice nurse, so you do not need to hire new licence practice nurse from outside hence it will also good in perspective of our budget.
Hope to hear from you soon,
Kind regards,
Divya Varde

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have addressed all three bullet points required by the task. You explained the reason for the request (enrolling in a nursing program), specified the desired hours (daytime shifts), and described the benefit to the employer (having a dual-qualified staff member). However, the development of these ideas is somewhat basic. For instance, the explanation of how the facility benefits could be more professional and detailed to better persuade your manager. While the task is fully addressed, the tone is slightly informal for a formal letter to a boss, which impacts the overall effectiveness of the communication.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the request to the justification and finally the benefits. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore' and 'for example' to link ideas. However, the paragraphing is insufficient; the entire body of the letter is presented as one block of text. To improve, you should separate the request, the explanation of hours, and the benefits into distinct paragraphs. Additionally, some transitions feel a bit mechanical, and the overall flow could be improved with more varied linking words to connect your sentences more fluidly.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'enhance my knowledge' and 'dual-qualified' (or similar concepts). However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'it will also good in perspective of our budget' and 'I will be helpful for both my study and my working time'. These phrasing issues slightly hinder the professional tone. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise professional collocations and ensuring that your vocabulary choices are consistently appropriate for a formal business context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as missing articles ('the Licenced Practice nurse'), incorrect capitalization ('i' instead of 'I'), and punctuation issues (e.g., 'Hello Miss. Brittany'). Additionally, there are minor errors in subject-verb agreement and sentence construction, such as 'the facility has benefits from my study'. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they occur frequently enough to keep the score in the 6.0 range. Focusing on proofreading for basic errors would significantly improve your score.
