Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Subject: Reduce working hours
Dear Sir/ Madam,
I am writing to request you shorten my working hours to organize my part time education.
I would need fewer shifts at work as I have enrolled myself in continuing education. My cohort will begin in the month of August, wherein I required to attend classes on regular basis. However, duration is 3-4 hours each day. This will not impact my professional commitments.
In order to manage it well, I am available to work during morning time between 8 AM to 1 PM everyday. During these 5 hours, I am confident in achieving my professional commitments towards my job role. While I am studying in the University, I can also apply these concepts at my workplace. My program is aligned with my job description and it focuses on process improvement. Implementation of these concepts can foster our profits.
I hereby deeply appreciate if you consider my appeal and support me in completing my educational goal towards professional growth.
Your faithfully

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained the reason for the request (part-time education), specified the desired working hours (8 AM to 1 PM), and described the benefits to your employer (process improvement and profit growth). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands your situation and the value you bring. To reach a higher band, ensure that the opening and closing salutations are perfectly aligned with the formal context of the letter.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized, with a clear progression from the request to the justification and finally the benefits. Each paragraph has a central focus. You use some cohesive devices such as 'However', 'In order to', and 'While', which help the flow of information. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter. To improve, ensure that transitions between sentences are more varied; for example, the connection between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother to better link your study schedule with your workplace availability.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to communicate your ideas clearly. Phrases like 'professional commitments', 'continuing education', and 'process improvement' are well-chosen and contextually appropriate. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'organize my part time education' (better: 'pursue my part-time studies') and 'foster our profits' (better: 'increase our profitability'). While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, incorporating more sophisticated collocations would help elevate the response to a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good. However, there are several grammatical errors that slightly affect the precision of your writing. For example, 'wherein I required to attend' should be 'wherein I am required to attend', and 'I hereby deeply appreciate if you consider' is slightly awkward; 'I would greatly appreciate it if you would consider' would be more natural. Additionally, 'Your faithfully' contains a minor error (should be 'Yours faithfully'). Despite these slips, the meaning remains clear throughout the letter.
