Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Manager,
I have been working for your company, Tata Motors, since 2015. I want to request a reduction in my working hours to enroll in part-time studies. I want to inform you that my course is directly related to my current job as a mechanic.
All my classes will start in the evening, but some will be in the morning. I can work in the evenings on Mondays and Wednesdays, and in the mornings on other days. You can also call me on weekends, since there will be no classes, and if you need any additional help.
Apart from this, my course will also be beneficial for you because it is a mechanical course focused on repairing new cars, which will ultimately help you repair them and understand the technology they use. It will not only improve customer satisfaction but also help to enhance the company's reputation.
Looking forward to hearing from you soon.
Yours faithfully,
Sahil

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the task. You clearly explain the reason for the request (part-time studies), specify the desired working hours, and articulate the benefits to the employer. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, providing a clear justification for the request. The response is focused and maintains a professional perspective throughout, meeting all the requirements of the prompt effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a formal closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which aids readability. You use cohesive devices such as 'Apart from this' and 'not only... but also' to link ideas effectively. The progression of information is smooth, moving from the request to the schedule and finally to the benefits. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, and the overall structure is coherent and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly and professionally. Phrases like 'directly related to my current job' and 'enhance the company's reputation' are well-chosen. While the vocabulary is functional and accurate, it is somewhat standard. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate more sophisticated collocations or precise terminology related to your field. However, the current range is more than adequate for the task, and there are no errors in word choice that impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The letter displays a good control of grammatical structures. You use a mix of simple and complex sentences, such as 'It will not only improve customer satisfaction but also help to enhance the company's reputation.' Punctuation is generally accurate, and the sentence construction is clear. There are no significant grammatical errors that distract the reader. While the range of complex structures is somewhat limited, the accuracy is high, and the writing is consistently error-free, which is a strong point.
