Student answer (Band 6.0)

Respected Boss,

I am writing this email with the intend to inform you about minimising my hour of work in your company. The reason of working less hours is the starting of my part time studies in college. I would like to provide you my schedule according to my classes so that, the timing doesn’t impact on either study or work. I will be available to work on Tuesday 12 PM to 5 PM Saturday, and Sunday from 9:00 AM to 04:00 PM.

There are significant advantages of being studied as part-time that i am still be able to continue to work in your organisation. Morever, i will apply my course knowledge into my workplace for effective and positive outcomes hence my study is relevant to my job duties responsibilities. I will be entitled to work with you and i will update you the next month availability as soon as possible.

Your sincerely,

Kajal

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The letter addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly state the reason for the request (part-time studies), specify the desired working hours, and explain the benefits to your employer. However, the development of these points is somewhat limited. For example, the explanation of how your studies benefit the employer is a bit vague, stating only that you will apply course knowledge. Expanding on how this specifically improves your current tasks would have strengthened the response. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter, although the salutation 'Respected Boss' is non-standard in English business correspondence; 'Dear [Name]' or 'Dear Manager' is preferred.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your request. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Morever' and 'hence' to link ideas. However, there are issues with the flow and mechanical use of some transitions. The sentence structure within paragraphs is sometimes repetitive, and the connection between the schedule and the benefits could be smoother. Additionally, there are minor errors in punctuation and capitalization, such as the lowercase 'i' used throughout the text, which detracts from the professional presentation of the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'minimising', 'organisation', and 'entitled'. However, there are several instances of awkward word choice and collocation errors. For example, 'with the intend to' should be 'with the intention of', and 'being studied as part-time' is grammatically incorrect; it should be 'studying part-time'. The phrase 'minimising my hour of work' is also slightly unnatural; 'reducing my working hours' would be more precise. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow of the text. Notable issues include subject-verb agreement ('my study is relevant to my job duties responsibilities'), incorrect preposition usage ('work on Tuesday 12 PM to 5 PM'), and persistent capitalization errors (e.g., 'i' instead of 'I'). While the meaning remains clear, these errors are frequent enough to prevent the writing from reaching a higher band. Focusing on basic sentence construction and proofreading for capitalization and articles would significantly improve your accuracy.
