Student answer (Band 6.0)

dear boss

I am writing this letter to acknowledge you that i am working as a pharmacy assistant in your store since december 2024. It is a great opportunity for me to be with you. i want to inform you that now i decided to go one level up for which i am going to start my study for pharmacist from upcoming december month. Unfortunately, as focusing on courses is vital and rules made by ircc for international students says on study-permit we are allowed to work only 24 hours maximum per week. because of which i cannot continue working full time. As my classes would be monday to thursday i will be available for work on weekends and friday. Also, as you know bus service are poor on weekends in our town, i prefer working morning shifts 8am-4pm. once, i will complete my education and get my pgwp. I would like to work as a pharmacist in your firm full time and you will have a dedicated and experienced worker.

I hope you will understand my situation.

your faithfull

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have addressed all three bullet points required by the task. You clearly explained the reason for the request (study commitments and IRCC regulations), specified the desired working hours (weekends and Fridays, 8am-4pm), and described the benefit to your employer (future full-time employment as a qualified pharmacist). The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter to a boss, although the opening and closing are slightly informal. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands your situation and your future intentions clearly. To improve, ensure you use a more standard formal letter structure, including a formal salutation and sign-off.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph addressing a specific part of the prompt. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat limited, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. For example, the transition between the explanation of your study permit and your availability is a bit abrupt. You rely heavily on simple sentence structures, which makes the progression of ideas feel slightly mechanical. Using a wider range of linking words such as 'consequently', 'furthermore', or 'in addition to this' would help improve the logical flow and make the letter feel more cohesive.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to communicate your message effectively, such as 'acknowledge', 'vital', and 'dedicated'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, 'acknowledge you' is not the correct usage; 'inform you' or 'notify you' would be more appropriate. Additionally, 'upcoming december month' is redundant. While your vocabulary is adequate for the task, you should aim to use more precise professional terminology and avoid repetitive phrasing to reach a higher band score. Spelling errors like 'faithfull' also detract from the overall quality.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation. Issues include inconsistent capitalization (e.g., 'i', 'december'), missing articles (e.g., 'study for pharmacist'), and run-on sentences. The sentence 'because of which i cannot continue working full time' is a fragment that should be connected to the previous clause. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement, proper capitalization, and sentence boundaries will significantly improve your accuracy.
